Designers of an apartment building in Manchester approached Architen Landrell to install a four coned atrium canopy on the roof of an eleven storey structure to provide a shaded rooftop and a focal point to the otherwise plain-looking building.

The geometry of the building meant the design of the structure was by no means straightforward and had to be repeated as details of the overall scheme changed. Within the factory, the basic four cones were cut and constructed before being transported to site in one piece for installation. Made from PVC coated polyester they were easily transportable and provided minimal problems throughout installation.

Problems for the Architen Landrell site crew were inevitable, however, as the giant four coned structure had to be installed eleven storeys above the ground. Constrictions on space inside the site led to the cranes being sited outside the hoarding line on an adjacent car park, and the installation crew having to spend hours at a time hundreds of feet in the air.
