Fabric rafts used to diffuse light

Birkbeck University

Client: Birkbeck University    Year of Completion: 2010
Architect/Designer: Bissett Adams    Main Contractor/Customer: Charter Construction

As part of a larger refurbishment of Birkbeck University, Architen Landrell’s Interiors department was contracted to design, manufacture and install some fabric rafts above a series of help desks.

During the design process the architect, Bissett Adams, flagged a design issue with the skylights – that the people working at the help desks below would be blinded by the lighting above. On recognition of the problem, the architects approached Architen Landrell to work with them to develop a shading concept which would solve the problem.

The solution consisted off a number of aluminium raft frames suspended from the ceiling and clad in Trapeze Plus, a lycra based material. Stretch fabric proved the most economical and effective way of achieving a smooth and light diffusing surface.

All in all the project was extremely straight forward. The manufacture was completed without a hitch and the frames and fabric installed in a one day installation. The rafts provide adequate light diffusion and all are happy with the results.
