Blue Reef Aquarium

Client: Blue Reef Aquarium    Year of Completion: 2009
Architect/Designer: Buttress Fuller Alsop Williams

Once home to Wildwalk, the location of one of the early Architen Landrell canopies, the Blue Reef Aquarium in Millennium Square, Bristol houses some of the world’s most interesting aquatic creatures and is now also home to a second Architen Landrell installation!

Architects Butress Fuller Alsop Williams approached Architen Landrell during 2009 to work with them to provide an interesting approach to covering the ceiling. With a nautical theme in mind, fabric sails fitted nicely with the design intent and as experts in interior fabric sails, we were the obvious choice to assist.

After completing a survey of the existing timber ceiling and joists, our design team set about designing and engineering four bespoke panels to fit the space. A close weave PVC glass mesh was used to fabricate the sails in order to retain some semi-translucency. The scheme required a material which would look crisp and clean while also provide a good surface for bouncing light from uplighters back down to the café space below.

As a company adept at installing complex and challenging projects, the Blue Reef installation came as a breath of fresh air to our project department. Project Manager Nick Mortimore comments “this was an extremely straight forward project with no hiccoughs or real challenges to overcome, well done to everyone involved”.
