PVC Awning

Commonwealth Coach Station

Client: Manchester City Council    Year of Completion: 2002
Main Contractor/Customer: Caddick Construction

The announcement that the Commonwealth Games were to be held in Manchester in 2002 sparked off huge excitement both inside and outside the sporting world! Extensive design schemes and building plans were put into place in order to ready the city for the influx of sports fans.

One of the major projects was the redevelopment of the Manchester transport system and included the refurbishment of the central bus station. As a major visitor entry point into the city, town planners were keen to ensure that the bus station was attractive and welcoming.

In 2001, Architen Landrell won the contract to design, manufacture and install a fabric canopy around the perimeter of the building in order to provide shelter for waiting visitors and to add aesthetic value to the building.

An L-shaped canopy measuring 2.5m by 30m was designed to fulfill the client’s needs. The canopy was made from white PVC coated polyester which offers excellent life expectancy and cost efficiency while also being easily maintained and aesthetically pleasing. The fabric was fitted into a steel frame with a galvanized finish and fixed directly to the existing building.

The client was delighted with the finished canopy and felt it to be a worthy edition to the modern styled building!
