Daily Telegraph Reflective Garden

Client: Daily Telegraph    Year of Completion: 1999
Architect/Designer: Michael Balston

Steel and fabric architectural structures for the Reflective Garden designed by Michael Balston and sponsored by the Daily Telegraph. This garden was an award winner in 1999 at the Chelsea Flower Show.

This bold and dramatic garden was designed by Michael Balston and sponsored by the Daily Telegraph as a statement of the future on the eve of the Millennium. The timeless nature of plants and garden planting was juxtaposed with the dramatic steel and fabric forms of the sculptured shade fabric. The main feature canopy blossomed flower-like out of the ground. The purity of form achievable with stressed fabric was the ideal complement to the natural plant forms. This reflective garden, a space of contemplation, was a gold medal winner in 1999 and was subsequently transplanted and recreated at the RHS garden at Wisley. The ability to relocate such a bespoke piece of fabric structure was an important part of the legacy plan envisaged as an integral part of their project.
