PVC Sails

Dundee University Dining Area

Client: University of Dundee    Year of Completion: 2004
Architect/Designer: J F Stephen Architects    Main Contractor/Customer: Torith Limited

The University of Dundee decided to brighten up the area for the students and install a series of architectural features. From a range of options fabric sails were chosen to do the job, and Architen were lucky enough to be awarded the contract for the design, manufacture and installation of the features.

The sails were part of a larger scheme to refurbish one of the student dining areas. Nine sails were installed in total, each measuring 2.5m in span.

The bright white sails, which hang above the heads of the restaurant goers, provide a light and attractive way of covering the boring ceiling of the building. Quite like birds in flight, this architectural feature doesn’t fail to catch the attention of the student and teachers alike, and enlivens an otherwise everyday space.
