European Expo - Lisbon 1998
Building on the UN resolution which declared 1998 the "International Year of the Oceans," the Lisbon exposition showcased the world's oceans and the maritime tradition.
Architen Landrell was commissioned to design a temporary decoration scheme made up of pixelated images of the flags of European countries.
Covering almost 35,000 square metres of space, the project was a vast undertaking for all involved. Interestingly and unlike most other banner projects carried out by Architen Landrell, the fabric was not printed but self adhesive coloured vinyl squares were stuck onto the base banner fabric to form the pattern.
The banners were then hung around the Expo entrance, and individual flags were displayed over the entry doors for each country.
The brief included removal of all banners to leave a structure looking as if it had never been touched. Every building was pre-sold for after-Expo to ensure that, after the Expo closed, the site would not be left semi-abandoned.
