Galway Racecourse

Galway Racecourse

Client: Galway Racecourse    Year of Completion: 2011

Approached by Galway Racecourse themselves, Architen Landrell was asked to design, manufacture and install a standard, double conic tensile fabric structure to cover the winners podium.

Galway Races wanted a tensile structure in the centre of their parade ring ready for the summer racing season to form a centre point of the parade where the awards would be handed out. Previously installed at both York and Chester Racecourses, the double conic structure caught their eye as the perfect solution and they approached Architen Landrell to discuss.

After a quick and easy sales process, we were instructed to proceed with the canopy and just 7 weeks later our guys arrived on site to fit the pre-maufactured structure.

As the canopy was being installed in a perfectly manicured parade ground days before the season was due to open, our usual installation method (using a telehandler) would have seriously damaged the landscaping. Our project management and installation departments worked hard to find an alternative and decided to install the structure from a crane to minimise the damage caused. A survey was carried out of the ground to ensure that it was suitable to take a crane but we discovered that the closest place we could operate a crane from was 40m away. Therefore the structure was installed from a tower crane from a distance which enabled us to install the entire structure without causing any detriment to the surrounding groundworks.
