Gillingham Football Club
The dull exterior of the Priestfield Stadium, home to Gillingham Football Club, was livened up by a bright tensile fabric canopy designed and installed by Architen Landrell.
As part of Gillingham Football Club’s large-scale redevelopment plan started during the late 1990s, designers approached Architen Landrell to liven up the entrance with some form of tensile canopy. In conjunction with the football club, Architen Landrell designed the structure to be modern and exciting while remaining within budget restraints.
The structure, consisting of a double conic canopy supported by a steel framework, was designed to provide protection from the weather for the queuing crowds and to provide a focal point to the main facade of the building.
The design and installation proved to be a fairly straightforward process, a simple PVC structure, tensioned with two central masts and fixed to the building face using a series of brackets.
The entrance canopy may have been simple in theory but undoubtedly provides maximum impact. The Gillingham supporters are now welcomed into the stadium in style and the canopy symbolises the modernity and forward thinking of the new Gillingham Football Club.
