Glan Clwyd Hospital

Client: Glan Clwyd Hospital Trust    Year of Completion: 1999
Architect/Designer: TACP    Main Contractor/Customer: Shepherd Construction

At Glan Clwyd Hospital, one of North Wales' leading cancer treatment centres, Architen Landrell’s brief was to design, manufacture and install a barrell vaulted feature forming an entrance canopy to give protection at the ambulance drop off point.

At Glan Clwyd Hospital in North Wales, designers recognised that it was important to make a statement to patients arriving at the centre for treatment. The installation of a large entrance canopy forms part of the larger scale renovation of the hospital and provides a vital lift to the exterior appearance of the building.

This unique item of fabric architecture, the hospital canopy, comprises five barrell vaulted fabric panels supplied in PTFE coated glass cloth, a fabric known for its long life expectancy and durability. As the hospital's budget was limited, resilience and strength were essential in achieving value for money. Architen Landrell embraced this brief and successfully created a striking structure within the financial restraints of the NHS trust.

The tensile canopy designed to give complete protection to the patients at this cancer treatment centre arriving by ambulance, helps to provide a warm welcome for all those who enter the building.
