Fabric Sails
Glasgow Caledonian University Library PVC Structure

Glasgow Caledonian University Library

Client: Glasgow Caledonian University    Year of Completion: 2005
Architect/Designer: Building Design Partnership

In the vast brand new library built by Glasgow Caledonian University, Architen Landrell was commissioned to design, manufacture and install a number of hypars in order to fill the high ceilings and improve the general acoustics.

When Glasgow University decided to build a new library, it was clear that the building would be the heart of the new development. Designers were keen to make it a comfortable and modern space for the students to study, and it was essential that noise was kept to a minimum.

Interior designer BDP approached Architen Landrell after seeing the hypar structure on its website. Designed to fill a space and to create an architectural feature, hypars seemed the perfect addition to an otherwise expansive space above the library and its students. The structures also have some ability to control the acoustics of a space, by lowering the ceiling and muffling the hub of noise.
