Gloucester Road Underground Station
When London Transport required a building wrap for a construction project, they approached Architen Landrell to help them out!
Gloucester Road Underground Station, now a listed building, was constructed in 1906, with a steel framework and glazed terracotta cladding.
Water seepage over the years rusted the steel, causing the cladding to lift and extensive renovation work to be required. During the seven months of remedial works, owners London Transport decided to clad the scaffolding with a full-size replica image of the station building. Part of the driving force was to replicate the shop signs to ensure that there was no loss of business for them.
Fabricated using banner grade fabric and printed onto by Scanachrome, the final facade covered 266sqm and was attached to the scaffolding using a PVC rod welded to the fabric.
The camouflage was a great success, with many regular passers by failing to notice that work had already started!
