Stretch fabric tensile feature

Grimshaw Transport Exhibition Cone

Client: Grimshaw Architects    Year of Completion: 2009
Architect/Designer: Grimshaw Architects

When one of the worlds leading architects asked us to manufacture and install a sculptural fabric centre piece for the launch of a brand new exhibition showing off their work, the team at Architen Landrell was excited.

Our interiors department worked closely with Grimshaws to ensure that the fabric structure design met their specific requirements. As Grimshaw themselves describe “this structure forms the centre piece of an exhibition of Grimshaw Transport Projects which we will be housing in the front atrium of our offices in London. As well as being an interesting and beautiful object in itself, It is also to represent a concept for the roof of a new subway station in New York that we are currently working on”.

The organic shape of the structure mean that fabric was the most logical choice of material. Architen Landrell advised the use of stretch fabric in particular in order to create the smooth shape and in order to keep the construction as simple and lightweight as possible.

Like most exhibition work the project had a quick programme and there was little room for error. However, fabric features require minimal time on site so additional time could be allocated to the design and manufacture phases.
