Haggerston Castle

Client: Bourne Leisure    Year of Completion: 2006
Architect/Designer: Terry Glazebrook    Main Contractor/Customer: Shepherd Construction

This piece of fabric architecture is a barrel vaulted walkway canopy that covers an amusement arcade and runs between two buildings of a 19th century stately home. The structure is part of a Bourne Leisure holiday park situated on the coast of Northumberland.

This barrel vaulted roof canopy provides weather protection for Bourne Leisure’s clients while they enjoy themselves at various games and activities. The design brief was to build a large activities hall between two 19th century buildings for the smallest possible budget. A mixture of glulam wooden beams, steel columns and tensile fabric was chosen for the structure. The main frame is formed from 15 curving wooden glulam beams supported on seven tubular steel columns with the load carried to these columns via tree heads on each column. By day the fabric membrane suffuses the space with light and by night the building glows with light from within.
