Heathrow Terminal 1 Walkway Canopy

Having worked at the terminal previously, Architen Landrell was asked to quote for the design, manufacture and installation of the fabric membrane and supporting steelwork for a canopy straddling a dual carriageway. The canopy consisted of 9 single masted bays totaling 72 square metres.

Based on a structure taken from our standard product range, the cantilevered canopy provides both weather protection and a pleasing appearance. As a pre-designed scheme, it proved more cost effective than other solutions and thanks to the professional concept drawings put together by our design department, the client was sufficiently impressed to award Architen Landrell the contract.

The fabric structures fit in beautifully with the surrounding environment; there are a large number of fabric constructions in the immediate vicinity and therefore there is a consistent theme in the space. This particular canopy also incorporated recessed lighting within the front rails to guide night time workers to the terminal building.

The job itself was very straightforward but we encountered the usual problems associated with large, high security sites. Our site crew installed the structure working at night and having to curtail and adapt shifts to allow for unforeseen passenger/aircraft movements. The installation was a success and both Architen Landrell and the client are pleased with the results.
