Heathrow Terminal 3 VIP Drop-off

Client: BAA    Year of Completion: 2004
Architect/Designer: Foster & Partners    Main Contractor/Customer: Mansell Construction Services Limited

A striking tensile fabric canopy providing weather protection for the VIP drop-off point at Heathrow Terminal 3. The canopy consists of three barrel vaults in PVC fabric supported by four steel portal frames. The fabric is attached to the steelwork by means of extruded alumium tracking.

The design concept was by Foster & Partners. Architen Landrell was responsible for the design detailing, engineering, and the manufacture and installation of the tensile fabric and steelwork.

The plan area of the canopy is 18 metres x 21 metres to allow VIP travellers to be dropped off and enter Terminal 3 in comfort.

The canopy is drained by guttering concealed behind a pressed steel nosing draining into flexible hoses running through vertical columns into a land drain.

The PVC fabric canopy was manufactured at our premises in Chepstow and installation was carried out using a scissor lift and telehandler.
