Japanese Pavilion

Client: Botanical Gardens, Montreal    Year of Completion: 1997

Designed as an iconic feature of the Japanese Garden at the Botanical Gardens in Montreal, Canada, the pavilion is a strikingly artistic piece.

In conjunction with Nova Scotian Architects, Architen Landrell was asked to design and manufacture the structure out of PVC coated polyester ready for it's transportation to Canada. Designers combined the pure white membrane with Japanese symbols of fertility to align with its use as a wedding reception venue.

The membrane was manufactured in Chepstow and shipped out to the site, where it met the steelwork which was fabricated in Canada for ease of transport.

Uniquely, the installation of the structure was carried out by the Cirque du Soleil who erected the entire pavilion without any safety equipment but relying on their tight rope and acrobat skills entirely!
