Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre

Client: West Sussex Council    Year of Completion: 2002

Work at Littlehampton Sports Centre focused on the refurbishment of a 20 year old Orbit type sports hall, including a new PVC exterior membrane and new thermal insulation.

The tensile structure of the original PVC Membrane roof had reached the end of its design life and needed to be replaced with identical cladding. Advances in Fabric technology meant that the Tensile fabric could be upgraded to extend the projected life of the entire aluminium framed structure.

To fulfil the client's requirements for the new structure, Architen Landrell had to develop a new generation of thermal insulation that combined the flexibility and fire retardency of rock wool with the structural strength of a solid insulation. This was achieved by designing, patterning and installing individual panels of insulation from 100mm thick rock wall quilted into PVC "Duvets".

Removal of the old insulation and installation of the new insulation was facilitated by co-ordinating this work with the phased replacement of the external membrane sheets. Due to the tight space restrictions on site, a just in time delivery system was adopted.
