Manchester Airport Banner
In order to welcome new visitors to the city of Manchester, "the gateway to the North", Manchester Airport decided to install a banner structure over the main exit from the arrivals terminal.
Architen Landrell was commissioned to design, manufacture and install a printed banner to stretch over the road as visitors exited the airport.
The giant steel arch, formed from two semi-circular steel tubes was manufactured by Architen Landrell's sister company and stretched over four lanes of traffic. The triangular banners attached to this giant frame in the top corners using a combination of rigging screws and cables to ensure it was securely fixed.
Made from a mesh fabric to ensure both light and wind could pass through the fabric, the sails were printed with welcome messages and background images. Architen Landrell was later asked to return to the site and change the message on the banners.
Being installed at height over the road, installation proved a challenge. Not only were extensive rope access skills required but also traffic management to ensure maximum safety.
