Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin

Client: Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin    Year of Completion: 1996
Architect/Designer: Robinson Keefe & Devane    Main Contractor/Customer: Patrick Brock & Sons Limited

Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, opened in 1956 as a teaching hospital, underwent vital refurbishment during 1996 in response to an increase in demand for both specialist treatment areas and associated accommodation.

As part of the redevelopment, a brand new entrance was built including a forecourt and vehicular set down area all at one level to make it accessible by foot, wheelchair or ambulance.

Over the entrance to the building, Architen Landrell won the contract to install a canopy to allow the transfer of patients from outside to in without braving the turbulent weather. Constructed using a light weight PVC coated polyester fabric and steel framing; the canopy is designed to define the hospital entrance.

The use of translucent material ensures that the entrance area is bright and this brightness is maintained at night by the use of metal halide uplighters which create a glowing effect.
