Polaris House

Client: National Environment Research Council    Year of Completion: 2000
Architect/Designer: Architen Landrell

A twin masted PVC canopy of approximately 750m2, the Polaris House Project formed part of a scheme to reclaim dead lightwell areas within the offices of a government research agency in Swindon.

The twin masted, double conic canopy forms a covered area in what used to be a dreary internal lightwell in this two storey building. The canopy provides an exciting and interesting way to deflect the worst of Swindon's weather from the newly formed breakout area, and when accompanied with charming landscaping forms a delightful additional internal space. The integral drainage system efficienty diverts storm water into the building's existing capture and collection system, and a handsome lighting system lends further charm to what is a diverting semi internal space, acheived at low cost and little disruption to a live facility during the build.
