Royal Yacht Squadron Pavilion
At the world's most famous and prestigious yacht club in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, Architen Landrell was asked to install a traversing motorised pavilion roof for a brand new entertainment venue.
This yacht club occupies the grade one listed West Cowes Castle. So when the club required an extra entertainment facility to be constructed as a separate building on the rear southern side of the garden, the design and construction standards were of the most exacting nature. Architen Landrell was called on to construct a moving barrel vault roof to enclose an inner courtyard to give a varying ambience for different events. The clear span vaulted roof is formed from rolled rectangular steel section and spans 6.6m, with a total length of 14 meters and is carried on eight wheels each side.
The roof is opened and closed automatically by a toothed belt system powered by an electric motor controlled either at the main control panel on the roof terrace or by a hand held remote control. All elements of the installation were constructed for ease of carriage and installation as every component had to be transported to the Isle of Wight on the ferries.
In just a few minutes the elegant translucent courtyard cover can be quietly slid open to provide a pleasant open court for afternoon tea or dancing under the light of the moon.
