Shawcare Solar Shading

The University was commissioned to analyse how the sun moved in the existing glazing and where to put specifically shaped sails to break up the glare. They also designed the most effective shape for the sails, and decided on a mix of rectangular and trapezoidal sails in various sizes. On their recommendation, Shaw Healthcare approached Architen Landrell to quote for the manufacture and installation of the sails in the dictated positions.

In total eight sails were installed over a walkway corridor which existed on split levels. The previous ineffective solution (also made from fabric) was removed from the area and the sails were installed in their place.

All sails were made to be identical but to be flexible enough to adjust to compensate for any unevenness in the walls. The frame design also allows for them to be altered periodically to combat the sun problem as it changes.

Installation was fairly straightforward and only complicated by the fact that the building was in use. Site installers worked within certain hours and with minimal disruption at all times to ensure the residents were undisturbed!

The residential care company own a lot of nursing homes around the country and are constantly building new ones. The success of this project has led to a further three orders for Architen Landrell using similar designs.
