Sukan Negara Railway Station

Client: K L Rapid Transit Authority    Year of Completion: 1997
Architect/Designer: Ove Arup    Main Contractor/Customer: Taylor Woodrow

Designed as part of a major new regeneration programme in the Kuala Lumpur region, the new Sistem Aliran Transit Ringan (STAR) railway system serves the entire area, including the Commonwealth Games stadium complex at Sukan Negara. The railway provides an elevated rapid train service linking together all parts of Northern Kuala Lumpur.

Designers asked Architen Landrell to design, manufacture and install a vast tensile system providing a stunning clear span roof of 4000m2 over the railway platforms.

The giant structure was made from PVC coated polyester to ensure it would be easy to ship without damage and withstand the intense heat of the eastern summer.

Installing the roof canopy provided a challenge for the Architen Landrell site crew. The heat and the dusty environment made it a sweaty and dirty process. However, the team worked tirelessly to meet the completion date.
