PVC Fabric features

The Deep

Client: Scenic Route    Year of Completion: 2002
Main Contractor/Customer: Bovis Lend Lease

Over 400 sharks stalk the corridors of The Deep Aquarium in Hull where Architen Landrell was commissioned to design, manufacture and install a series of fabric features.

Described as the world’s only submarium, the underwater aquarium is one of the north east’s primary family attractions. The building itself was designed by Sir Terry Farrell and built as part of the National Lottery’s Millennium Commission project so it was only appropriate for the interior to match the stunning exterior.

Architen Landrell fought off competition to win the contract to design, manufacture and install several features within the building and to integrate lighting into the fabric sculptures.

One of the projects, a fabric enclosed walkway provides a stunning entrance into an exhibition space. Architen Landrell installed over 25 curved fabric panels to create the feeling of a tunnel. The screens were lit with indigo lighting to add atmosphere and to guide visitors through to the next room.

In addition the installation of a series of artificial clouds over a shark tank could have been a hair raising experience for the installation crew but luckily staff removed the sharks before they could become bait!
