The Glades Shopping Centre

Client: Integral (Interiors)    Year of Completion: 2007

Architen Landrell was asked to design a fabric feature to fit above an information desk to provide solar shading. The glazed atrium roof of the shopping centre was creating glare and obscuring the computer screens of the desk staff below.

In conjunction with the client, Architen Landrell opted to use blackout fabric to minimise glare as much as possible – the high levels of natural light meant that this would achieve the right balance between light and shade.

The high atrium roof posed some problems for the installation team and in addition to the usual fixing methods; the hypar had to be fixed back to a structural column. The unknown make up of the column meant that the column had to be exposed before fixing and investigated to find the most appropriate place.

After successful installation, the client has been happy with the results, and with the summer sunshine approaching, the hypar is as needed as ever!
