The Public

Client: The Public    Year of Completion: 2008
Architect/Designer: Alsop Architects    Main Contractor/Customer: ISG

At arts venue The Public, the client wanted to use fabric to create an airy, yachting type feature suspended from the ceiling to form an understated but interesting surface.

The low ceilings meant that sails were not a possibility so Architen Landrell worked closely with designers to produce flat ceiling panels tensioned to form sail like screens.

Fabric proved perfect for this use, bring a lightweight and translucent surface to the already compact space and causing minimal disruption during the installation process. The ceiling grid system did mean that the panels had very specific fixing point and the panels had to be exact in size. On a couple of the larger panels, this meant that careful planning had to be undertaken!

Accomplishing the purpose perfectly and achieving the smart look the client desired, the project was a great success and Architen Landrell hope to work with both Mivan and Alsops in the future!
