Waterloo Station Information Board

Client: Network Rail    Year of Completion: 2008
Main Contractor/Customer: Bailey Rail

At Waterloo Station, London, train passengers are provided with detailed travel information on large LED information boards in order to make their journey as smooth as possible. However, the summer sun combined with a fully glazed roof was posing severe glare problems as the boards were being read, so Architen Landrell was called in asked to provide possible light-weight and cost-effective solutions.

There are two sets of large information boards giving passengers information on platform arrivals and departures. In the summer, there was a huge glare problem with the sun rising from behind these boards and streaming through the glass roof, and the station controllers were keen to find a solution. Passengers were being blinded and not be able to read the boards so we were invited to submit a cost-effective fabric proposal to block the direct light out.

Having performed previous project work for Waterloo Station, Architen Landrell already had a good working relationship and a solid reputation with the client. We were approached to provide a competitive bid and worked closely with the client to ensure that their needs were met.

Architen Landrell initially carried out a survey of the existing high level roof support steelwork to establish how a fabric structure could be fixed. A series of design proposals were then put to the client, all combating the problem but using different approaches. After liaising with the client, Architen Landrell set about manufacturing and installing two huge vertical walls of fabric and several angled roof panel sections mimicking the line of the glazing.

Manufacture of the panels was a straightforward task but the installation proved difficult due to the station’s long opening hours. Our team only had site access for three hours each night so work had to be carried out quickly and efficiently. Co-ordination, logistics and a clear plan had to be thought through each day, and as the job progressed and different issues were faced we had to be quick to adapt otherwise significant time would have been lost. The team worked together effectively and kept in constant communication with the client to ensure that the project was completed on time, to budget, and successfully satisfying the brief..
