ETFE Roof

Waverley Station

Client: Network Rail    Year of Completion: 2006
Architect/Designer: Ove Arup Partners Scotland    Main Contractor/Customer: AMEC Design and Build Project Services Ltd

Originally on site to install an ETFE roofing system, Architen Landrell returned to Waverley Station, Edinburgh in 2006 to carry out a further 4500 square meters of roof upgrade.

Waverley Station is the home to an innovative system designed especially for this situation by Architen Landrell. Our brief was to waterproof the existing failing roof lights as sympathetically as possible so they did not appear to loose the old Victorian sightlines.

ETFE film roof membrane, purpose made aluminium clamp bars including purpose designed extruded aluminium sections were fixed to the existing roofing timbers and bolted to the roof purlins.

Logistically the project was very demanding due to the little storage and space being available to us. Our site crew worked over a massive scaffolded crash deck which allowed the station to remain open while works were carried out overhead. All staff had to take the track-side qualification PTS before being allowed to work on site.

It was very gratifying to see also that the work we carried out in phase one remained as good as the day it was installed and had performed extremely well in a very harsh environment.
