Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Solar Shading Canopy
Architect/Designer: Devereux Architects
When Wyeth Pharmaceuticals took over a new office building, they wanted to place their own mark on the interior and adapt it to their needs.
As the atrium had never previously been used as a working space, the glass and white walls created a huge problem with solar glare which had not been a problem for the previous inhabitants.
To resolve the difficulties created by this solar glare, the client wanted to install a tensile fabric feature that would counteract problem but would also blend in with the existing design. Architen Landrell offered the design, manufacture and installation of a solar shading structure which would meet their exact requirements.
Light strength tests were carried out by the client and Architen Landrell incorporated the resulting information into the design of the fabric feature. Once the light strength results were returned the choice of fabric was easy to make – the dense weave of Mermet fabric E-Screen 7505 allowed us to reduce the direct light penetration substantially. A pearl/linen colour fabric was chosen to give a contrast to the white surroundings.
The client was impressed with the design of the canopy and it has provided both a design feature in an otherwise plain space and a practical addition to the office environment.
