99 Queen Victoria Street

Client: Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation    Year of Completion: 2007
Architect/Designer: Pringle Brandon

Architects Pringle Brandon contracted Architen Landrell to help them solve the problem of an echoey and noisy atrium for the multi-national banking company.

Architen Landrell decided that the best way to counteract the bad acoustics was with a series of Natte hypars – kite shaped sails – which were suspended from the ceiling in a spiralling pattern. The sails also provide an element of solar shading for the glass atrium and bring an extra touch of class to the entrance of such a prestigious corporation.

Due to the limited access to the top of the office atrium, the site crew decided the best approach was to install the hypars by fully assembling them on the floor, and hoisting them into the air complete. Access was gaining through a cleaning gantry where the string of hypars could be raised to the atrium ceiling.
