An advanced ETFE system designed for next generation salad propagation
Architen Landrell partnered with Crystal Heart Salad Company and the University of Nottingham to deliver a bespoke ETFE greenhouse, engineered specifically for research and controlled environment growing. This project showcases how modern ETFE systems can transform protected cropping and horticultural structures.
The 12.4m x 18m greenhouse uses a single skin ETFE membrane to maximise natural light, improve energy efficiency and create a bright, stable environment for young plants. Lightweight aluminium arches, a galvanised steel base frame and stainless steel bracing form a high-performance tensile fabric structure that’s both durable and low maintenance.
Inside, Crystal Heart are trialling innovative propagation methods, climate control strategies and sustainable substrates, demonstrating how well designed greenhouse structures support year round food production and research.
This project highlights the benefits of ETFE technology for the horticulture sector: exceptional transparency, long lifespan, minimal structural load and outstanding design flexibility.
If you’re exploring ETFE solutions, greenhouse design or protected cropping structures, our specialist team would be delighted to help.
