Silverstone Club House
When the British Racing Drivers Club, owners of Silverstone Race Circuit, wanted to redesign their clubhouse, they decided to hold a design competition to design and construct a brand new building.
Winners of that competition, Ridge Architects, envisaged a dynamic and modern building with a “dramatic wing like tensile fabric roof” to provide cover to the open roof terrace.
The membrane, which Architen Landrell designed, manufactured and installed at the world famous racing club, is constructed from PTFE coated glass cloth over a steel frame. Contrasting well with the smooth glass curved of the clubhouse building, the fabric roof appears to hover over the terrace like a bird in flight! At night, the structure cannot fail to impress as it is lit from the underside to provide maximum dramatic effect.
While the canopy itself has proved a great success, Architen Landrell's Maintenance Department have also contributed to the structure - they've cleaned and maintained it for the most part of ten years!
