Architen Landrell Olympic Projects

Written by in London 2012 Olympics

A year has come and gone since the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games and we are pleased to be able to now share the extent of our Games time work and involvement as Supplier.

Architen was recently acknowledged by We Made 2012 for our contribution to the London 2012 Games in the following brief click here.  In total, Architen worked on eight prestigious projects that literally shaped the face of the Games and the Olympic Park – enhancing both the spectator and athletes experience.

Project Briefs:

Aquatics Centre

We enabled Zaha Hadids landmark venue to grow from accommodating 2,500 spectators to 17,500 by adding temporary fabric seating sections. The two 50m tall wings were wrapped in over 20,000m2 of fabric.

Water Polo Venue

This entirely demountable fabric structure was the worlds first dedicated Olympic Water Polo Venue. We designed, manufactured and installed the air inflated roof cushions and wrapped the venue entirely in fabric.

International Broadcast Centre

We cladded this industrial building in 33 tensile fabric panels. Panels were lit at night with colour changing LEDs, having it shine with brilliance. The building was transformed with fabric from eyesore to eye-catching.

Athletes Tunnel

To provide weather protection for 10,000+ athletes entering the Olympic Stadium, we created a 33m long inflatable fabric tunnel.

Soundforms

As the only bandstand located in the Olympic Park during Games time, this portable outdoor stage delivered world class concert hall qaulity sound to those visiting the park.  The structure was made of eight inflatable waterproof PVC coated polyester cushions, creating one structural unit.

Olympic Stadium West Stand

Working ultimately for Sir Robert McAlpine, the scalloped canopies were primarily designed to provide weather protection for stadium attendees accessing their seats. However, architectural firm Populous were also keen to use them to bring a positive visual appearance to this functional area and provide a softer side the industrial design of the stadium.

The Apple

We designed and manufactured a bespoke inflatable hand painted fabric apple. The apple was the central focal point during an apple themed segment of the London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremonies.

Olympic Park Bridge Wrap

For one of the main bridges into the Olympic Park, we wrapped it in LOCOG Look of the Games branding. The fabric helped keep visitors safe crossing the bridge while adding colour to the landscape. The bridge had an integrated fountain spraying onto the water below.
