  • Fabric shade for restaurant

As part of the refurbishment of the Great Square at the British Museum, a new exhibition hall and restaurant area was created. Designers incorporated a fabric canopy over the restaurant to combat the problem of glare.

The award winning enclosure of the Great Court of the British Museum threw up some unique problems for the fitting out of the new public spaces created. The prestigious upper floor restaurant required a relaxed and calming ambience that was potentially eroded by the harsh glare of sunlight streaming through the triangular faceted glass of the new roof.

Architen’s solution was to install a fabric shade over the restaurant itself, designed in a shape and shade complimentary to the environment of the new covered court. The curved, white canopy blends perfectly with the clean lines and colours around it and provides an understated yet beautiful feature for the diners to enjoy.
