  • ETFE foil cushions are adorned with two different batik patterns designed specifically for this project
  • 212no. ETFE Foil Cushions in total

Drawing on the Indonesian landscape, the South Quarter area was designed by Aktins to show that ‘opposing forces are interconnected in the natural world’. The simple shapes and curved geometries come together to create a harmonious balance between man made construction and the natural environment. With this in mind, ETFE foil provided the ideal material; easily able to take on a curved form, highly translucent and very lightweight.

212no. 2 layer ETFE cushions come together to form the domed roof over the retail hub. Each ETFE foil cushion is printed with one of two specially designed patterns; both traditional batik designs to reflect the heritage of the area and contrast with the modernity of the architecture. Alongside providing a dramatic aesthetic, the printed patterns also help to control the levels of light and heat transmitted into the retail space below and therefore contribute towards the development being one of the most sustainable in Jakarta.

Architen Landrell worked closely with contractors PT Binatama Akrindo to deliver the dome covering – the first ETFE cushion project in Indonesia!
